Williams is a former US Army Ranger. He participated in what is considered to be one of the most dangerous missions of D-Day when he and other Rangers climbed the 100-foot cliffs at Pointe du Hoc near Omaha Beach, facing heavy German defenses at the top.〔(Carroll University ) "Carroll College professor will be part of West Point event" April 1, 2003〕
